Are You a Great Leader In Your Family Life? (Part 2/5)

coaching Mar 10, 2019

This post is about leadership in your family and how it connects to your own health and wellness. I know that it's challenging for you to put your own health and wellness first because you feel selfish. Let's apply the idea leadership to how you can be a leader in your own family. Becoming a stronger family leader doesn't mean that you have to do more things. In that context, you can probably take a step back and do less than you are doing right now.

So what does leadership within your family look like? How does it relate to your own health and wellness? The idea of leading by example, doesn't mean that you do it all yourself. If you're a parent, there's a good chance you're running around the house with a ton of things on the go all the time.

At some point in your children's life, you want them to grow up and leave the nest. Part of that process is to equip them with the skills, tools and abilities for life. When they do leave, they'll be successful. It's the same as your exit strategy in business. What happens if you get hit by a meteor? Who will run your business? You need to teach your kids the skills so that if you aren't around, they still know what to do.

Being a leader in your family means spending time teaching your kids life skills. As they grow up, integrate more tools so that when they are on their own, it isn't a steep learning curve on how to run a household.

At home, are you enabling behaviours for other family members to assume a passive role? Or not tow their weight as part of the family? Do you do it all? You're the chief, the cook, the bottle washer. The person who runs the whole household. At some point, there's a good chance that you're going to become resentful. If you're the only one doing it all that leaves very little time for you to nurture yourself.

It's important for you to show your family that you have hobbies and other interests. That you have an identity of your own. If you're so busy doing all the "things" around the house, then you'll have no time to pursue your own interests. Is that being the best leader you can be? Is that the example you want to set for your children?

Sometimes that means that you need to delegate tasks or pay someone else to take on some of the chores. It means that you need to get your family on board to work as a team towards your shared vision. What are you working towards together? Is it to be able to spend time together out in the mountains? Or to have a movie night once a week where you all hang out together? Perhaps it's a big vacation once a year.

If you're busy running around doing everything, you're not going to have time do enjoy those fun family activities. Or you may be physically present, but your mind is focusing on your to-do list.

When you think about leadership as it applies to your own health and wellness- the idea is not to do it all. It's to lead by example in your family. It's allowing family members to step up and take turns being leaders. Continue working towards that shared goal and celebrate your successes along the way.

The next blog in this series is going to focus on how you can be a better leader within your workplace and how that relates to your own health and wellness.
